Some masculine adjectives in the nominative singular have two forms: the short (indefinite) and the long (definite) form of the adjective. The noun can be preceded by both forms, and the difference in meaning of these two forms is the same as the difference in the use of definite and indefinite article in English. The definite form is used when it is preceded by a possessive or demonstrative pronoun. e.g. velik restoran, ovaj veliki restoran
In some cases, when being part of a complex predicate, only the short form of the adjective can be used. e.g. Ovaj čovek je lep. Ovaj čovek je lepi.
The masculine form adjectives ending in -an, -ar etc. lose the a when used in the feminine and the neuter gender. This is called a fleeting A. e.g. interesantan interesantna interesantno; dobar dobra dobro
Adjectives that in the masculine singular form have the suffix -tan, in the feminine and the neuter gender, lose not only the fleeting A but also the consonant T. e.g. bolesTan bolesna bolesno
Neuter adjectives can either end in -o or -e depending on the preceding consonant; after soft (palatal) consonants (such as j, lj, nj, ć, č, š, đ, ž, dž) the suffix -e is used, and after hard consonants (all others) the suffix -o is used. e.g. bolesno dete, loše pismo
