There are three demonstrative pronouns denoting something that is :
a) in close vicinity and can be touched
sg. ovaj, ova, ovo
pl. ovi, ove, ova
b) further away and cannot be touched
sg. taj, ta, to
pl. ti, te, ta
c) far away
sg. onaj, ona, ono
pl`. oni, one, ona
They have three forms (regarding the masculine, the feminine and the neuter gender) both in the singular and the plural. They behave like adjectives, thus corresponding with the noun in case, gender and number. e.g. OVAJ čovek. OVA žena. OVO dete.
In everyday spoken Serbian it may very often occur that : - OVO (sg. n.) and TO (sg. n.) are used as synonyms e.g. OVO je kuća. TO je kuća. - the only demonstrative pronouns used to describe the difference in distance are OVO and ONO. e.g. OVO je kuća a ONO je zgrada.
When functioning as the subject of the sentence they are used in the singular form neuter. e.g. OVO je Marko a ONO je Zoran.
These demonstrative pronouns can be used together with place adverbs. OVAJ - OVDE e.g. OVO pismo OVDE pošaljite sutra u Nemačku. TAJ - TU e.g. Govorimo o TOJ ženi TU pored tebe. ONAJ - ONDE e.g. Ko je ONAJ čovek ONDE.
